Pineda Drives in Three to Lead Softball Past AIC, 7-1 and 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - Sophomore Hannah Pineda drove in a team-high three runs to lead the Adelphi University softball team to another doubleheader victory over American International College on Wednesday afternoon, 7-1 and 3-0, to earn Adelphi a season sweep of the series.

Pineda went 4-for-5 with a combined three walks and three RBIs across the two games, as she drove in the first run of the afternoon overall with an RBI single in the first inning of game one, and drove in two of Adelphi's three runs in the nightcap victory.

Nicoletta Cuccio also drove in two, one in each game, on the afternoon, with an RBI double in game one and a triple in game two which saw her score on some heads' up base-running to the throw home.

Emily Turney launched her sixth home run of the season to cap the scoring in game one, with a two-run blast in the sixth inning of the opener, capping off a four-run sixth where Emily Whitman also plated a run with an RBI double.

Ally Muller and Nicole Mengel scored wins in the circle for Adelphi (27-17, 17-6 NE10), with the former striking out nine in seven innings in game one, and the latter throwing six shutout innings in game two.

Mengel gave way to Jessica Vadala in the final inning of game two, and the graduate student notched her second save of the season after entering with runners on second and third and none out. The right-hander induced a ground ball double play to keep AIC (8-32, 5-19 NE10) off the board, and induced a game-ending popout to seal both the shutout and the season sweep for the Panthers.

The Panthers close out the regular season with a four-game series against division foe Le Moyne College this weekend. The teams will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday afternoons, beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
