Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team scored a victory over the first-place team on the Southwest side of the Northeast-10 conference, Pace University, on Tuesday afternoon, 5-2.
Daniel Taggart clinched his third consecutive victory on the mound for the Panthers, improving to 3-0 on the season. The senior completed a total of 7.0 innings, striking out four batters in the process.
Tom Ambrosino earned his fifth save of the year, in closing the final 1.1 innings.
Adelphi (15-5, 6-1 NE10) saw four batters with two hits each, while Brett Malm, Thomas Colombo and Lucas Terwilliger posted one hit each, as the latter two combined for four RBI.
Both squads were silent through the first two innings, before Colombo's RBI single scoring Lawrence Cicileo put one on the board for the home team.
Sitting with a 1-0 edge, the Setters (14-9, 4-5 NE10) tied the game in the sixth off their own RBI single up the middle.
In the bottom half, a bases-loaded walk capped a two-out rally that started with an infield single from Tyler Becker's bat to return the lead to Adelphi as it moved into the seventh. A three-run eighth sealed the hosts' victory, as the Setters walked in another run to get things going to Adelphi.
With the bases loaded courtesy of singles from Morse and Cicileo, Terwilliger's two-run single through the left side gave Adelphi its final two runs of the contest, ending the inning 5-1. Despite Pace crossing the plate once more in the ninth, a diving catch from Tim Feliz into the right field warning track marked final out to end the inning.
The Brown and Gold will travel to Mercy College tomorrow for a non-conference matchup with the Mavericks. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
