Johnson Becomes Program Leader in Assists in #2 Women's Lax Win over Saint A's

Garden City, N.Y. - Alison Johnson has had three or more assists in the last five games, but tonight, three was the magic number as the junior finished with four points, becoming the Adelphi women's lacrosse new program assist leader in a 16-1 win over Saint Anselm College.

The career assist mark was held by Claire Peterson who set the mark of 206 in two seasons (2010-11).

Ten different players scored for Adelphi (14-1, 11-0 NE10) after the Hawks (7-7, 5-6 NE10) tallied the first goal of the contest. Alyssa Gillespie sparked a run of 16 unanswered goals from the home team en route to the final decision. Saint Anselm fell victim to turnovers and big stops from goalkeeper Emma Lemanski who concluded the contest with five saves overall. Alexandra Beebe, Nicki Stanco and Kailey Broderick were all responsible for caused turnovers in the first half, the latter two each recording five for the game.

The last goal of the first half was scored by Lena Riportella, who received a pass from Johnson, marking the junior's 207th career assist to become the new program leader.

Riportella, who led the team on offense with five goals (finishing with six points), recorded her hat trick strike as the first tally of the second half after the Brown and Gold took a 6-1 lead into halftime. Christina Ferrara collected three assists in the final 20 minutes of play, as Gianna Bifulco and Nina Soto both buried shots past Bailee Pudvar.

As regulation came to a close, several keep plays off the bench from Emily Perry, who relieved Lemanski with just under seven to go, who notched four saves in a matter of minutes after a slew of shots were taken from Saint Anselm. She stopped two free position shots from being converted and backed up the rebounds with two more saves to hold the Hawks to their lowest scoring output this season. Kristina Schweitzer was responsible for the final goal of the game, which also happened to be her first career tally.

The Hawks' keeper Pudvar was responsible for seven saves in the loss.

The women's squad returns to action on Wednesday, April 24 in Syracuse, N.Y. Both Adelphi and Le Moyne are currently undefeated as the Dolphins take on Bentley prior to their meeting with the Panthers. Last season, it was Adelphi who stole the regular season decision, but fell to Le Moyne in the conference finals and the NCAA tournament second round.
