Garden City, N.Y.- A walk-off double courtesy of Brett Malm sealed the Adelphi University baseball team's victory over Dominican College, 8-7, on Thursday evening.
Malm's game-ending hit gave the #23 Panthers (23-5) a victory in a contest they led for the majority, but saw Dominican put up a three-spot in the top of ninth inning against Tom Ambrosino.
Finishing 2-for-4 at the plate, Malm tallied four RBI, including a two-run homer and a double down the left field line to score the the Panthers' final run of the contest. Another standout in the Adelphi lineup was Brandon Warick, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, as well as driving in three runs.
Jonathan Iadevaia, Thomas Colombo, Lawrence Cicileo, Kyle Olson and Michael Cattani each added a hit to the board, getting on base in crucial moments for Adelphi (23-5).
The Panthers got off to a hot start, scoring three of their eight runs in the first frame. Malm scored the first on a wild pitch, before Warick tacked on his first two RBI on a single to left field.
Dominican (19-15) then took advantage of a wild pitch to score its first run in the third inning.
However, following base hits from Warick and Iadevaia, a home run to left field off Malm's bat scored three runs for the hosts, giving them a 6-1 advantage over the Chargers in the fourth.
The Chargers scattered their next three runs across the following three innings, beginning with two base hits and a wild pitch. Although the home team extended their lead to 7-4 off another RBI from Warick, Dominican was able to even the score with a two-run homer to left field in its final attempts with the sticks.
However, Adelphi had an answer coming out in the bottom of the ninth, starting with a leadoff walk from the speedy Iadevaia. In Malm's final at-bat, the senior darted a just-fair ball down the left field line, allowing Iadevaia to hustle around the basepaths to score the winning run in walk off fashion.
The Brown and Gold will return to action next week in a Northeast-10 contest with Pace University on Tuesday, April 16. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the Setters' home field.
