Garden City, N.Y. - In its return to William J. Bonomo Field after a six-game road trip, the Adelphi University baseball team defeated Northeast-10 divisional foe, Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon, 8-3.
Adelphi trailed 3-1 in the contest, but Thomas Colombo's two-out, two-run homer in the third inning tied the game before Jonathan Iadevaia's RBI double in the fourth gave the Panthers a lead they'd never relinquish.
Iadevaia and Lawrence Cicileo led the charge for Adelphi (22-5, 11-1 NE10), batting a combined 6-for-8, and each tallying two RBIs. Brandon Morse, Brett Malm, Lucas Terwilliger and Brandon Warick additionally added one hit each to the board.
On the mound, Daniel Taggart clinched his fourth win of the season, hurling a total of 6.2 innings and fanning five Southern Connecticut batters while working around six walks.
The Owls (12-19, 3-9 NE10) got on the board first, scoring two runs in the second inning on back-to-back RBI singles. The visitors later scored their final run of the contest on a solo home run by Tyler Criscuolo to right field in the following inning, to stretch their early lead to 3-1.
Following the two-run third, Taggart faced the minimum in the fourth thanks in part to Brandon Warick's arm, as he threw out a runner trying to steal second base.
After Iadevaia's go-ahead hit in the bottom of fourth and with Adelphi now in front, another run was added in the fifth after Malm took advantage of a wild pitch.
One inning later, three sequential singles from Iadevaia, Warick and Morse drove in the Panthers' sixth run. The latter two later scored on another double from Cicileo, giving Adelphi an 8-3 edge over Southern Connecticut.
With the bases loaded and Seth Sypniak on the mound in the eighth, the infield prevented the visitors from scoring with turning a swift double play to keep a five-run lead.
The Brown and Gold will return to Bonomo Field tomorrow as they faces off against Dominican College at 3:30 p.m.
