Garden City, N.Y. - A marathon, rainy day on Janet L. Ficke Field ended with a 2-1 victory for the Adelphi University softball team over visiting Wilmington University (Del.) on Sunday.
On a day which should have seen a scheduled doubleheader begin at 1 p.m. has it not been for inclement, rainy weather throughout the day on Sunday, Adelphi and WIlmington eventually took to the turf to contest a single game shortly before 5 p.m.
The Panthers (13-12) saw both their runs scored thanks to
Nicoletta Cuccio, who drove in
Emily Whitman with an RBI double in the bottom of the third, only to score later in the inning on a passed ball.
However, Wilmington (17-9) eventually proved to be a hard-luck loser in the contest, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh inning to lead, 7-2, before the Panthers were unable to complete their turns at-bat in the bottom of the frame, with the game reverting back to the last completed inning.
The Black and Green got on the board against
Ally Muller in the top of the sixth inning, having been held to just one hit after a leadoff bunt single by Rosa'Lynn Burton in the innings that preceded it.
A one-out single, a stolen base and a walk allowed the Wildcats to cash in their only official run, as Lauren Lopez drove in Kiana Broderson-Jones with an RBI single to right field.
The Brown and Gold return to action on Wednesday, April 3, traveling to Southern Connecticut State University for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
