Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

LIU Post/Adelphi Rivalry Ends in OT Defeat for #2 Women's Lacrosse

Garden City, N.Y. - In a storied rivalry that no one wanted to see end, the LIU Post Pioneers visited Motamed Field for one final time in regular season action Saturday afternoon, earning an overtime victory over Adelphi women's lacrosse, marking their first loss of the season.

The LIU Post/Adelphi women's lacrosse overall series record? Panthers 13, Pioneers 12. The overall score though? 259-all.

The non-league matchup marked the 25th meeting since the first game in 2001, and before Saturday's contest, the teams had only taken a trip to overtime on one other occasion.

The Pioneers (8-2) rattled off three consecutive goals after Adelphi's Alison Johnson scored the first of the contest, and went on to command a 4-2 lead at halftime. Sara Stephens' man-up tally came after the home team was issued a double-yellow card, one to the bench and the other a defender.

LIU Post continued to press after the break, scoring the first two of the second half. It was Allison Stackpole who sparked a three-goal spurt for the Panthers (8-1) which was capped with a goal from Chelsea Abreu who brought the home team within one. The visitors pushed back out to a 9-6 lead at the 12:34 mark but in miraculous fashion Adelphi scored two with under 30 seconds to force an overtime.

Johnson found Kole Pollock on a basketball in-bounds type play which she fired into the goal over her shoulder to send the game to overtime.

Three minutes expired with no goals to force the switch of direction in the overtime segment, and a caused turnover from Kailey Broderick followed up with a successful clear gave the Panthers the advantage. An untimely turnover however sent LIU Post back down the field where Trish Brisotti was able to net the gamewinner for the Pioneers.

The no. 2 ranked women will return to action on Tuesday, April 2 when they take on Southern Connecticut State in a late afternoon Northeast-10 matchup. On Monday, April 1, be sure to follow the @ncaalax instagram account to follow the Panthers takeover for the day.
