Springfield, Mass. - In the first two of a three-game weekend series, the Adelphi University baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against American International College (AIC), clinching game one 5-1, and falling to the Yellow Jackets in game two, 9-2.
In the victory, Ed Baram locked in his fourth win of the season, opening the three-game series on the hill for Adelphi (14-5, 5-1 NE10), and despite a quiet offensive start, the Panthers posted a five-run eighth inning to secure game one's victory.
Both teams remained silent across the first 3.5 innings, before the hosts put up their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back singles from the Yellow Jackets (10-9, 3-3 NE10) drove in the only run for the home team.
After another scoreless three innings, the Panthers entered the eighth with a leadoff double from Tyler Becker to left field. He then stole third, allowing Kevin Krippel to give himself up on a sacrifice fly for Adelphi's tying run. Immediately after, a pinch hit double off the bat of Tim Feliz brought Brandon Morse up for an RBI single, earning the Panthers their first lead of the contest.
Following a pitching change and a hit by pitch to Lawrence Cicileo, Thomas Colombo's RBI single to center field scored Morse for Adelphi's third run. In the next at bat, Lucas Terwilliger drove in two runs on a double to right center for the final runs of the contest.
Baram pitched a total of 7.2 innings, matching his season-high, in addition to striking out seven AIC batters in the process. Tom Ambrosino closed the final innings to secure the Adelphi victory in the first game.
Despite home runs from Colombo and Cicileo in game two, the Panthers could not catch AIC's lead in its final attempts as the Yellow Jackets haulted the Panthers eight-game win streak.
The Yellow Jackets were the first to get on the board once again off a leadoff home run to start the second inning. The hosts advanced their lead in the next inning with an RBI triple down the right field line, making the score 2-0.
In Adelphi's half of the fourth, Colombo stepped up to slam his fifth home run of the season to put the Panthers on the board. However, the Black and Yellow had an answer in the bottom half, scoring two more runs off an RBI double for a 4-1 advantage, and scored five more in the fifth.
Cicileo shed some light with a home run in the next inning, but Adelphi was unable to cut the home team's lead at the end of nine.
Three different Adelphi pitchers were scored against in the nightcap, but Nicholas Maricich proved a bright spot out of the bullpen, hurling three innings of one-hit ball.
The Brown and Gold will close out the series with the Yellow Jackets tomorrow in a single game at 1 p.m.
