Bats Boost Softball to Sweep at Pace, 7-6 and 7-2

Pleasantville, N.Y. - A combined 14 runs on 16 hits powered the Adelphi University softball team to a season sweep of Pace University on Thursday afternoon, as the Panthers took both ends of a doubleheader, 7-6 and 7-2.

Adelphi (12-12, 6-1 NE10) evened its record on the season after an 0-7 start with the sweep, having also beaten Pace on home turf in the first game of the three-game Northeast-10 Conference divisional series on Tuesday afternoon, 3-1.

Across the two games, Emily Turney drove in a team-high four runs on a 3-for-4 afternoon, which included her second home run of the season to kick off game two.

The junior's RBI double in the first inning of the opener gave the Panthers an early lead, but they took the lead for good on a two-run blast from Emily Whitman in the second inning that put the Brown and Gold back on top, 3-2.

Hannah Pineda and Lauren O'Neill each drove in two runs in game one as well, on a two-run single and triple in the second and fourth innings respectively, but Pace (5-8, 2-5 NE10) nearly pulled off a rally in its final turns at-bat.

The Blue and Gold scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth against Ally Muller, thanks to an RBI single from Amy Carberry, whose two-run double in the bottom of the first had given the Setters a brief lead, and a bases-clearing double from Abby Brambila.

Nonetheless, the Setters could not push the tying run across, as Muller struck Emma Schafer out looking to end the inning with runners at the corners, and later saw the tying run thrown out at home to end the sixth before leaving the game-tying runner on third with one out in the seventh.

In the nightcap, Turney's three-run blast in the first got Adelphi off the mark early, and the Panthers scored in four of the five completed innings before the game was called due to darkness.

Pineda and Lauren Sandelier each notched two hits in the game in support of Nicole Mengel, who evened her record at 3-3 on the season in the circle.

Adelphi returns to non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at home, welcoming Wilmington (Del.) to Janet L. Ficke Field for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
