Late Push Helps Baseball Defeat SCSU in Divisional Opener, 7-2

New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University baseball team secured its first Northeast-10 divisional victory over the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon, 7-2.

Both teams remained scoreless for the first five innings before Thomas Colombo drove in Brett Malm for the game's first run in the top of the sixth.  In the next inning, singles from Jonathan Iadevaia and Brandon Warick allowed Brandon Morse to tally his first RBI of the game on a base hit up the middle.

Two batters later, an error on the Owls' shortstop brought Warick home from third, and a run on a wild pitch then scored Morse.

Sitting with a 4-0 lead going into the eighth, the Panthers (13-4, 4-0 NE10) put up their three final runs, starting with another base hit off the bat of Warick to score Lucas Terwilliger from second. Warick and Michael Cattani later crossed home plate for the sixth and seventh runs, courtesy of an RBI double from Morse.

The Owls (9-13, 0-3) used their final at bats to end the shutout for Adelphi, tallying two runs before the contest's final out.

Malm, Morse and Warick each posted a pair of hits, with Warick also scoring two runs, while Lawrence Cicileo, Colombo and Iadevaia added one hit to the board as well.

Daniel Taggart improved to 2-0 on the hill for the season, pitching a total seven innings, and allowing no runs. The senior also fanned five SCSU batters before being relieved by Kevin Glasser.

"Taggart was outstanding with hitting the right spots and keeping a good pitch count," Head Coach Dom Scala commented. "In addition, a major key to our offense was two out hits from Colombo, Morse and Malm."

The Brown and Gold will travel to Springfield, Mass. for its first three-game series of the league slate against NE10 opponent, American International College. The doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 12 and 3 p.m.
