Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team advanced its winning streak to six after defeating non-conference opponent, Mercy College, 10-3, on Tuesday afternoon.
Adelphi (12-4) saw four batters with two hits (Brett Malm, Lawrence Cicileo, Tyler Becker, and Jonathan Iadevaia), in addition to hits from Brandon Morse, Thomas Colombo and Lucas Terwilliger and Kevin Krippel.
The Panthers got out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, giving a solid cushion for the remainder of the contest. Terwilliger got on base off a double to center field, followed by a walk to Becker and Iadevaia. With the bases loaded, Terwilliger was able to score off a wild pitch for the Panthers' first run.
In the next at bat, an RBI single off the bat of Kevin Krippel brought Becker around before Tim Feliz gave himself up on a sacrifice fly for the third run of the inning. Malm's double to right center brought home Krippel and Morse for the fourth and fifth runs, and two of the senior's three RBIs on the afternoon.
The Panthers scored their final runs across the third and fifth innings, beginning with an RBI double from Iadevaia. In the fifth, a series of base hits from Cicileo and Colombo allowed Cicileo to score on a defensive indifference on the strikeout.
Mercy (10-13) was able to cut its deficit by putting one on the board in the sixth, and two in the eighth. The Mavericks got on following a double and an Adelphi error for their first run, and two innings later, an RBI single brought home two more runners for the Blue and Gray.
However, the Panthers sealed the victory in their half of the frame, putting up three more runs. Morse extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a double to right center in his final at bat.
Immediately after, Malm doubled to left field bringing Morse home, and advancing Adelphi to eight. Cicileo followed with an RBI single through the right side, and he later scored on a sacrifice fly from Colombo.
The Brown and Gold will return to Northeast-10 play on Wednesday versus Southern Connecticut State University. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
