Garden City, N.Y. - Five straight goals to start the second half helped the second-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team survive a scare on Wednesday afternoon, as the Panthers rallied to defeat 17th-ranked New Haven, 9-8.
Adelphi (6-0, 3-0 NE10) led the game 4-0 in the first half thanks to a hat trick from
Kole Pollock in the first seven-plus minutes of the game. However, the Chargers (4-2, 2-1 NE1) scored six straight to lead by two at halftime, looking to win just their second-ever meeting against the Panthers in the 27th contest between the two schools.
Â
Alison Johnson nonetheless put the Panthers on her back in the second half, as she scored four of the Panthers' five goals in the second 30 minutes to help the Brown and Gold stay undefeated on the season to date.Â
New Haven made it interesting in the game's final minutes, getting on the board twice in the final 74 seconds, but
Christina Ferrara won the game's final draw with 11 seconds left to seal the win.
Ferrara and
Chelsea Abreu won a combined 10 draw controls for the Panthers out of 12, while
Gianna Bifulco and
Christina Ferrara accounted for the other two Adelphi tallies.Â
The Northeast-10's leading scorer, New Haven's Mackenzie Reh, tallied three goals and four draw controls with two ground balls for the Chargers, while goalkeeper Gianna Guerra held Adelphi to under 10 goals for the first time in nearly a year.
The league's second-ranked keeper in goals against average coming into the game, Guerra made 14 saves to hold Adelphi in single digits for the first time since a 7-5 win over LIU Post on April 7, 2018.
Adelphi has a quick turnaround, returning to action on Friday afternoon to host the Greyhounds of Assumption College, ranked No.19 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II national poll, at 5 p.m.
