Softball Splits Slugfest with LIU Post

Brookville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University and LIU Post softball teams combined to score 27 runs across two games on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action, with the Panthers taking game one of the doubleheader, 10-5, and the Pioneers taking game two, 10-2.

Adelphi (3-10) pounded out 14 hits in the opener, with Emily Whitman and Nicoletta Cuccio sparking the offense at the top of the order. The freshman and senior tandem went a combined 8-for-10 in the first and second spots, scoring seven runs, with Cuccio also driving in two.

Hannah Pineda and Ashley Lombardi also drove in two runs in game one, giving Ally Muller all the offense she'd need and more for her second win of the season. The sophomore fanned eight batters in seven innings, and held on for victory after allowing three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh on extra base hits.

The Pioneers (8-4) flipped the script in game two, as Abbey Fortin greeted Jessica Vadala with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first - the first of three long balls for LIU Post in five innings - before Leah Mele tacked on a three-run shot in the third and Breanna Klaiber's two-run blast in the fifth off of Nicole Mengel ended the game via the run rule.

Adelphi did make it a 3-2 game after three innings after scoring a pair in the third, as Whitman continued to swing a hot bat with an RBI single for one of the Panthers' three hits in the nightcap.

The Brown and Gold close out Spring Break with more non-conference softball at home on Sunday, as Adelphi welcomes Mercy College to Janet L. Ficke Field for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on March 17.
