Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team scored a second straight sweep of an East Coast Conference opponent on Janet L. Ficke Field on Sunday.
The Panthers (5-10) swept visiting Mercy College, 9-0 and 4-3, having also swept another non-league foe out of the ECC, NYIT, last Saturday at home.Â
Adelphi scored wins in contrasting fashion, with
Hannah Pineda's two-run single in the sixth inning - which bounced off first base and away from any Maverick in the infield - helping it secure a come-from-behind victory in a game it initially led, 2-0.
In game one, the Brown and Gold tallied nine runs on 10 singles, with seven walks by Mercy pitching allowing them a host of baserunners across five innings. Pineda also knocked in a run in the opener, as she,
Nicoletta Cuccio and
Lauren Sandelier recorded three consecutive base hits to help Adelphi to a three-run second, before the home team scored six in the third to put the game away.
In the big inning, 12 Panthers came to bat with a total of five hits and four walks, including back-to-back free passes to
Emily Turney and
Ashley Lombardi with the bases loaded that led to the inning's last two runs.Â
Ally Muller hurled five innings of three-hit softball in game one, striking out eight for her third win of the season, while
Jessica Vadala scored the win out of the bullpen in game two, despite surrendering three runs in relief of
Nicole Mengel in the second game.Â
Mercy (9-7) scored three runs against the senior in the fifth, greeting her with three straight hits, before an error helped give Mercy its first lead of the afternoon across the two games.Â
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to another ECC foe in Long Island rival Molloy College. First pitch from Rockville Centre, N.Y. is slated for 3:30 p.m.
