Boca Raton, Fla. - The Adelphi University baseball team continued its Florida slate against Northeast-10 opponent, Merrimack College on Thursday afternoon, but fell short to the Warriors, 5-2.
Adelphi (5-3) scored first in the contest in the top of the third, as Brandon Morse extended his hitting streak to eight games with one after a ground ball single down the left field line. Thomas Colombo later stepped to the plate, and the senior roped single to right center to score Morse and give the Brown and Gold a 1-0 lead over the Warriors.
However, the designated home team on the campus of Lynn University had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, taking the lead 2-1 off an RBI single up the middle from Nick Shumski, followed by a wild pitch.
The Warriors later increased their lead to two off a solo home run by Thomas Joyce to right field, and one inning later, Merrimack (5-6) tallied its second home run of the contest, scoring two runs off the bomb to right center field by Shumski.
Adelphi tried to make a come back in the ninth, as Michael Cattani's RBI single scored one and the tying run came to the plate with two outs, but Merrimack's Stephen Fleury induced a fly ball from the bat of Kevin Krippel to secure the victory for the Warriors.
Adelphi saw six batters in the hit column, with Colombo leading the way with two, and Morse, Brett Malm, Lawrence Cicileo, Lucas Terwilliger and pinch-hitter Cattani posting one hit for the Panthers.
Nicolas Luc was dealt his second loss of the season, pitching a total of 6.2 innings with five runs (two earned) and four strikeouts, before Nick Palmerini relieved the starter and threw a scoreless 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
The Panthers will get another shot at the Warriors tomorrow at 2 p.m. on the campus of Santa Luces.
