Lakewood, N.J. - Despite home runs from the bats of
Hannah Pineda and
Emily Whitman, the Adelphi University softball team was swept in contrasting games at Georgian Court University on Tuesday.
The Panthers (2-9) let a 3-0 lead slip away in game one, eventually losing in an extra-inning walk-off, 4-3, before they surrendered 12 runs on 10 hits and made five defensive miscues in the field in a 12-2 nightcap defeat.
Pineda launched her second home run of the season to open game one, a three-run blast in the first inning that gave Adelphi a 3-0 lead. However, the Lions chipped away before winning in dramatic walk-off fashion in extra innings on an RBI singles from Kendalia Turner.
An eight-run third inning against the combination of
Nicole Mengel and
Kristin Fealy was Adelphi's undoing in game two, as the Panthers entered the bottom of the frame trailing 3-1 and left it behind 11-1.Â
Nicoletta Cuccio and Whitman notched RBIs in the nightcap, with Cuccio's run-scoring single getting Adelphi on the board in the third, and Whitman's first career long ball tacking one on in the fifth.
The Panthers are back in action on Thursday afternoon, as they travel to local rival LIU Post for two in a rematch of last year's East Regional final beginning at 11 a.m. The double-header marks the first time that head coach
Carla Campagna will face the team for which she served six seasons as an assistant coach.
