Irvine, Calif. - After being shutout for 11 innings on Tuesday, the Adelphi University softball team strung together some offense against the Concordia Irvine Eagles in Wednesday's series finale, but the Panthers ultimately fell by a 6-3 final at Eagles Field to end their first series of the season.
The Eagles (7-1), who moved up one spot in Wednesday's National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) national rankings to No.9, got a second win in their three in the series behind the arm of reigning NFCA Freshman of the Year Callie Nunes, who pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts after hurling a 12-strikeout no-hitter in game one of Tuesday's series.Â
The Panthers (0-3) did manage two hits against Nunes and three against Jordan Quinn in relief on Wednesday, which included
Hannah Pineda's RBI double in a three-run sixth inning which pulled Adelphi to within two at 5-3.Â
The home team had previously opened up a 5-0 lead after five innings against
Ally Muller and
Jessica Vadala, with both clubs going scoreless after the first two frames.Â
Emily Whitman recorded two of Adelphi's five hits in the game overall, as the rookie went 2-for-4 in the second spot in the order with a run scored, while
Lauren Sandelier and
Lauren O'Neill accounted for the other Adelphi hits.Â
The Panthers' West Coast trip continues on Friday evening, as they travel to Azusa, Calif. to take on Azusa Pacific University in a doubleheader slated to begin at 4 p.m. PST.
