Azusa, Calif. - The Adelphi University softball team's West Coast trip continued on Friday, as the Panthers dropped a pair of games to the Cougars of Azusa Pacific University, 3-2 and 5-1.
After being shut out in two of its first three games of the season at ninth-ranked Concordia Irvine, the Panther bats showed more life in their second series, as they tallied a combined 13 hits across the doubleheader.Â
Nonetheless, Adelphi (0-5) was a hard-luck loser in game one, falling in walk-off fashion after climbing out of a 2-0 deficit, and couldn't get the big hit in the nightcap, stranding a total of 10 runners on base .
Three different Panthers notched RBIs on the afternoon, however, as
Lauren Sandelier and
Emily Turney drove in runs in game one, while
Nicoletta Cuccio authored the lone one in game two.
Cuccio went 4-for-7 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk across the two games, as Turney and
Lauren O'Neill each had a two-hit game in the opener and second, respectively.
Freshman
Ashley Lombardi notched her first collegiate hit in the top of the sixth inning of game two, while classmate
Emily Whitman walked twice.
The Panthers close out their trip west on Saturday, as they play two at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif. First pitch of game one is slated for 2 p.m. PST, 5 p.m. EST.
