Philadelphia, Pa. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team took down the No. 16 team in the country, University of the Sciences, 60-52, on the road Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match-up at Bobby Morgan Arena.
The upset marks the Panthers' seventh-straight win, keeping them undefeated at 7-0 for the season thus far. Meanwhile, the Devils dipped to 6-2 overall.
Following a tumultuous first 20 minutes, Adelphi, which led 32-28 at the half, opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run in the first 3:24 to build a 39-28 advantage with 6:36 left.
Katie Murphy ignited the spurt with a three-pointer, and
Leonie Edringer followed with back-to-back baskets.
The Panthers would lead 45-33 at the conclusion of three quarters. Adelphi held USciences without a field goal (0-8) and forced 11 turnovers in the period.
USciences answered back in the fourth quarter, scoring the first nine points to close the gap to a one-possession game (45-42) at the 4:45 mark. However, Murphy and
Emily Miccile responded with back-to-back threes to build the Panthers' lead back up to nine points (51-42) with 2:56 left.
Additionally, Adelphi shot a near-perfect 8-of-10 from the foul line down the stretch and contained the Devils to just two field goals in the final 2:30 to seal the victory.
Edringer led the Panthers with 21 points and 10 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season.
Katie Murphy also had 10 points, her sixth double-digit scoring game of the 2019-20 season.Â
The Panthers capitalized on the Devils' 25 turnovers, producing 22 points -- the fourth time this season they have converted for over 20 points.Â
Adelphi returns to the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday (Dec. 4) for its 2019-20 Northeast-10 Conference home opener against Le Moyne College at 5:30 p.m. Adelphi's SAAC will be collecting cans at the game for their annual food drive for Island Harvest.
