Garden City, N.Y. - With the help of 20 points and 17 rebounds from
Chris Coalmon, the Adelphi University men's basketball team secured an 82-62 non-conference victory voer Concordia College Sunday afternoon, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
It was a bleak first two minutes of action as neither team could land a bucket, until both sides drained three-pointers to get the scoring going. It was the Clippers (1-8) that pulled away early with a lead until four straight three's from the home team, courtesy of
Dwaine Williams,
Jared Rivers and
Owen Soontjens, returned the lead to Adelphi (5-2).
Concordia kept it close with under three minutes to play, but the Panthers managed to close out the half with six unanswered points to hold an eight-point advantage at the half. Both teams shot in the 30-percent range from three-point land in the first half but it was the home team that saw the upper hand in bench points and points produced off Clipper turnovers.
A 10-2 stretch highlighted the opening minutes in the second half for Concordia, who managed to bring the game even at 37-all - but it was Silva from beyond the arc on four consecutive possessions that extended the host lead to double-digits. Silva scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half alone, and dished out seven assists for the game.
Coalmon's layup with 1:38 left in regulation put the Clippers down by 20, as the home team managed to lead by at-most 22 points, despite a close first frame.
In the second half, Adelphi improved their shooting from downtown, nearing 60 percent (8-for-14) and added 27 more points from non-starters.
The Panthers will open up conference play at home on Wednesday, December 4 when they host Le Moyne College. The men's contest will tip half hour after the conclusion of the women's contest, at approximately 7:30 p.m.
