Garden City, NY – The top seeded Adelphi Panthers were stunned earlier this evening by the #8 Yellow Jackets of AIC in a double-overtime thriller by a score of 3-2 in the Northeast-10 quarterfinal. With the loss, the Brown and Gold (15-2-1) are ousted from the NE-10 Tournament while AIC (8-6-3) moves on to the semifinals.
The visitors wasted no time getting on the board and did so in the 11
th minute with Josip Validzic finding some space and connecting on the top right corner of the net, giving his team the early 1-0 lead.
Adelphi knotted the contest in the 38
th minute after
John Aydogan notched his third goal of the season on an assist from teammate
Mads Michaelsen. Two of the Panther's five shots in the first half were on target while AIC managed just three total shots, all of which were not on goal.
In the 58
th minute,
Aidan Keenan gave the Brown and Gold their first lead of the evening after
Paolo Marciano fed his senior teammate on a cross from the right side to beat AIC's Ben Taylor. However, the Yellow Jackets struck back less than 20 minutes later on Jake Durham's boot.
The tables turned in the second half with the visitors holding a 7-2 corner advantage and out-shooting Adelphi, 10-6. Through 90 minutes,
Matt Apicella had five saves to his name.
In the first overtime,
Ofek Pinto registered the only shot on goal, a header that was stopped by Taylor. Four minutes and one second into the second overtime, AIC broke the silence on a bicycle kick by Durham to put an end to the game.
Head Coach
