Garden City, N.Y. - The No. 6 and top-seeded Adelphi University men's soccer team dropped a gut-wrenching 1-0 decision to ninth-seeded Post University in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Championship on Saturday at Motamed Field.
With the loss, the Panthers rounded out their 2019 campaign at 15-3-1 overall. It was Adelphi's seventh-consecutive year of achieving 10 wins or more.
The one goal that made the difference came in the 59th minute. A giveaway by
Matt Apicella led to an open net for Post's Phillimon Bedard-Khalid, who tapped a Sergio Diaz touch into the unguarded cage for what was the deciding tally.
The Panthers nearly struck first in the 34th minute, but
Taylor Kaczynski's 1-on-1 opportunity was stopped by Eagles' sophomore keeper David Mollenthiel and
Aidan Keenan's follow-up was cleared off the line by a defender to keep the game scoreless.
Mollenthiel, who finished the night with 10 saves, also made a diving save to his left to keep a
Paolo Marciano free kick out of the net in the first half. The two teams would head into halftime in a scoreless tie.
After Post eventually broke through for the game's first goal, the pressure was on Adelphi to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
Mollenthiel had a sprawling stop on a Kaczynski header in the 69th minute, whileÂ
Filippo Peri, in his return from injury, put a strike off the crossbar in the 81st minute.
Then, in the last five minutes of regulation, Mollenthiel made three more crucial saves, including a one-handed robbery of a
Joseph Thomann header with 3:44 left.
Kaczynski sent a shot towards an open net in the final seconds, with Mollenthiel well off his line, but Post defender Matteo Guagliardo headed it out of harm's way to seal it for the Eagles.
