Garden City, N.Y. - Despite an advantage when looking at the team comparison, the Adelphi University volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to Franklin Pierce Friday evening, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
The Panthers (11-10, 4-6 NE10) held the upper hand in blocks, kills and service aces, but struggled to close out a win due to offensive miscues and service errors. The Ravens (10-11, 4-6 NE10) sought vengeance after narrowly dropping the second set and squeezed out victories in the third and fourth to come away with the win.
The loss featured a 17-kill performance from
Sara Mandreja and another 10 kills contributed from
Cara McKenzie.
In the opener, the hosts rattled off an 5-0 run which forced Franklin Pierce to call a timeout. With
Victoria Bailey at the service line, she capped the stretch at six to give the home team a three-point advantage. A 10-2 run from the Ravens was all they needed to regain control of the set, closing out the win on an Abigail Garnhart kill.
A back-and-forth affair through the second, Adelphi was able to maintain the lead with the help of a service ace from Kaylana Leechow and kill from McKenzie. Closing the door and evening the match at one-all was the duo of Mandreja and
Samantha Collins who put a stop to an attacking Mariah Robles, who finished the contest with 13 kills.
It was strings of unforced errors that plagued the Panthers in the following two sets, as consistent offense for the visiting team proved substantial in the NE10 matchup.
The squad will celebrate the members of the graduating class on Saturday, November 9 prior to their 1:00 p.m. contest against Southern New Hampshire.
