Garden City, N.Y. - Using double-digit performances from
Spencer Foley,
Chris Coalmon and
Ronnie Silva, the Adelphi Unversity men's basketball team started off the 2019-20 slate strong with a 76-63 victory over Queens College Friday afternoon, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Silva, Coalmon and Foley were responsible for 17, 16 and 15, respectively as the latter two combined for 14 rebounds and the former dished out four assists. Adelphi (1-0) capitalized on the Knights (0-1) miscues, scoring 22 points off turnovers and using 30 points from reserve players.
The Brown and Gold got off to a hot start in the opening 10 minutes of action, using an 11-2 run to lead by eight. In that stretch, Foley accounted for two buckets from beyond the arc and a jumper in the paint, totaling eight points. For over two minutes under the midway point of the first half, neither team scored until a Coalmon free throw broke the silence.
Adelphi was able to extend it's lead into double-figures approaching halftime, taking advantage of traveling violations and blocked shots from the Knights. The visitors were led by Elijah Bovell who was 7-12 from the field and accounted for 18 points for the contest, only scoring five in the opening frame.
Coming out of the locker room
Jared Rivers,
Austin Beech and
Joshua Koulamallah all contributed scores that kept Queens at bay. The Panthers largest lead of the non-conference contest came with 3:58 remaining in the second half, when a
Dwaine Williams shot from three-point range put the home team ahead by 20. From that point on the deficit was too great to overcome as Adelphi put a check in the win column for the season opener for the fifth consecutive year.
As hosts of the Conference Challenge, the men's squad is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 9 as they take on Georgian Court in the second set of the doubleheader, starting approximately at 6:00 p.m.
