Bridgeport, Conn. - In its final tune-up before the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, the Adelphi University women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to reigning national champion University of Bridgeport in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Knights' Field.
Despite outshooting the Purple Knights (9-6-2) by a 10-7 count in the first half, Bridgeport converted on all four of its shots on target in the period and brought a 4-1 advantage into the break.
The Panthers (9-5-2) fell into an early 1-0 hole just over five minutes into the game, but managed to level the score soon after.
In the 12th minute,
Taylor Iacono sent a long pass forÂ
Maialen Herreros, who dodged past Bridgeport goalkeeper Helena Dahlstrom and tucked a shot into an open net for the equalizer.
Iacono nearly put Adelphi ahead after Herreros' first collegiate goal, but her two opportunities on the doorstep only seconds later were denied by a sprawling Dahlstrom.
Later in the half,
Alexsis Weiser had a chance to pull the Panthers within a goal at 3-2 in the 39th minute. Her header on a cross rang off the crossbar though.
Weiser finished the contest with a game-high four shots. Iacono accounted for three shots, while
Juliana Klaum,
Hailey Franco and Herreros all had two shots apiece.
In goal, sophomore keeper
Sarah Hofmeier made five saves for Adelphi. Dahlstrom turned aside five shots for Bridgeport.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will now begin NE10 Tournament play, starting Sunday (Nov. 10) in a quarterfinal tilt against American International College at 1 p.m. at Motamed Field in Garden City, N.Y.
