Garden City, N.Y. - It would take a shootout to decide it, but the No. 3 seed Adelphi University women's soccer team fell to sixth-seeded American International College on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Championship at Motamed Field in Garden City.
In a best-of-5 shootout, the Panthers (9-5-3) and Yellow Jackets (8-8-3) converted on each of their first tries, before
Mia York was stopped on Adelphi's second attempt.
York aimed left, yet AIC goalkeeper Tamra Zippin guessed correctly and kept the ball out of the net. While the Panthers scored on their next three tries, the Yellow Jackets made all five of their attempts to advance to Thursday's semifinal round.
In the opening half, Adelphi outshot AIC 6-1, though both teams went into the half scoreless. Making her first appearance since Oct. 22,
Kerianne Scorce narrowly missed putting the hosts in front in the 31st minute, when her shot of an
Alexsis Weiser cross went wide of the frame.
Then, in the second half, the Yellow Jackets had most of the opportunities and outshot the Panthers 8-4, but the match would head to overtime.
Weiser came inches from netting the game-winner in the final seconds of the second overtime. Her shot off a run with seven seconds left struck off the right post, setting the stage for penalty kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Hofmeier made seven saves in regulation for Adelphi. It was the second-most saves for her in a single game this year. Zippin turned aside two shots for AIC. Both teams had 13 shots and five corner kicks apiece in the contest.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers will now await word on a potential at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Championship. The tournament field will be announced in a selection show on
NCAA.com at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18.
