No. 6 Men's Soccer Locks Up NE10 Regular-Season Crown on Senior Night

Garden City, N.Y. - It was two first-half goals Wednesday night that secured a 2-0 win for the No. 6 Adelphi University men's soccer team against Northeast-10 Conference rival The College of Saint Rose in the team's 2019 regular-season finale at Motamed Field in Garden City.

The victory gave the Panthers (15-1-1, 10-1-1 NE10) their fourth NE10 regular-season title in as many years and will cement Adelphi as the No. 1 seed in the NE10 Championship, beginning with quarterfinal play this weekend.

The two first-half tallies for the Brown and Gold came only 7:42 apart and proved to be all the offense that Adelphi needed.

In the 23rd minute, Alessandro Corti settled a touch from Stephen Megaloudis and curled a left-footed strike inside the right post for the game's opening goal. The tally was Corti's second of the year and his first since the season opener on Sept. 5.

Then, in the 30th minute, Paolo Marciano, in his return from missing four games due to injury, doubled the Panthers' lead. Off a throw-in by Tommy Speed, a header won by Saint Rose (10-5-2, 6-4-2 NE10) landed at the feet of Marciano, who finished a 1-on-1 opportunity into the mesh to make it a 2-0 game.

Adelphi, which took a 2-0 advantage into halftime, controlled possession for much of the latter 45 minutes of play. The Panthers allowed just one shot on goal in the second half.

On Senior Night, Matt Apicella picked up his second shutout of 2019 in his final regular-season start. He made a game-high three saves in the full 90 minutes of work.

Prior to the contest, Apicella was recognized alongside fellow seniors Billy Horgan, Taylor Kaczynski, John Aydogan, Aidan Keenan, Ofek Pinto, Corti and Megaloudis, as part of the team's Senior Night festivities.

Head Coach Gary Book and the top-seeded Panthers will now host No. 8 seed American International College in an NE10 Championship quarterfinal on Saturday (Nov. 9) at 7 p.m. at Motamed Field in Garden City.
