Garden City, N.Y.- The Adelphi University field hockey team competed in their final game of the regular season on Saturday, November 2 on Motamed Field, which resulted in an 8-0 shut out over Northeast-10 foe Southern Connecticut State University.
The Panthers (14-4, 12-2 NE10) honored the graduating class of 2020 in its annual senior game prior to the start of competition. The team recognized seniors
Marisa McLeod,
Allie Laird,
Elissa Frein,
Katelyn Zaneski,
Danielle Powers, and graduate student,
Stephanie Peragallo.
The victory over the Owls (1-16, 1-13 NE10) marked a game of highs for Adelphi, with two Panthers netting multiple goals. Freshman standout,
Giana McKeough recorded the team's first hat trick of the season, finding the back of the net in the fourth, 27th, and 38th minute.Â
Three seniors also found the back of the net in the regular season finale. McLeod logged the first tally for the Brown and Gold, just three minutes in, during her first career start. She was assisted by
Alexandra Docyk on a penalty corner inserted to Frein who crossed the ball left, where McLeod tapped it in to kick start the shut out. Laird then netted her third career goal, at the end of the first quarter as she received a cross from Powers.
Frein netted her first of two goals in the 16th minute off of a corner from
Jackie Brown. Hungry for more, Frein scored again this time from
Danielle Kempf, just six minutes into the second half, pushing the lead to 6-0.Â
Powers shot a successful penalty stroke in the final quarter of play, to round out the 8-0 win.
The Panthers out shot the Owls 42-7, with 29 shots on goal, while Adelphi defense held Southern Connecticut to just two shots on goal with Peragallo saving both to record her seventh shut out of the season. Despite the loss, visiting goal keeper, Brianna Craft logged 21 saves, her third most this season.
Adelphi returns to Motamed for the opening round of the NE10 tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 5. While the bracket will be released later Saturday, once all regular season games are complete, the Panthers will host the quarterfinal matchup at 4:00 p.m.
