Garden City, N.Y.- The No. 7 Adelphi University field hockey team fell to St. Thomas Acquinas College in double-overtime in the Northeast-10 Championship Quarterfinals Tuesday night on Motamed Field.
The game remained scoreless for the first half of regulation play, as both teams fought to keep the other off the board. In the final three minutes of the third quarter, Adelphi's (14-5) leading scorer,
Elissa Frein, redirected a pass from
Kaylee Deleva to net the game's first goal, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Opening the final quarter of regulation with high energy, the Spartans (10-9) returned the tally in the 53rd minute. Lotte Strijbos tapped the ball in after a scramble at the arc's center, to even the score and push the game into overtime.
After a silent first overtime, STAC netted the game winner in the 78th minute of play. The goal, scored by Briannah Thorne, propels the Spartans into the semifinals of NE10 Championships where they will face Southern New Hampshire University on November 8.
Despite the loss, Adelphi out shot the visiting team 31-18 and 19-10 on goal. The Panthers also logged 20 corners, while the Spartans had just eight.
Adelphi's goal keeper,
Stephanie Peragallo recorded eight saves, her second highest to date, while STAC keeper, Suzanne Clarke saved 18.
The Brown and Gold await their fate in the NCAA tournament, with the hopes of earning an at-large bid to the field. The NCAA Division II selection show is scheduled for Monday, November 11 at 3:00 p.m.
