Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team opened up its 2019-20 home slate on a high note Saturday night, rolling to a 98-59 win over Caldwell University in non-conference action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.
With the win, the Panthers are 4-0 for the first time in the
Missy Traversi era. Adelphi previously last began its season with four consecutive wins in 2014-15. Meanwhile, the Cougars fell to 0-3 overall.
The Panthers jumped out to a commanding 24-6 first-quarter lead, behind a blistering 55.0 percent (11-of-20) shooting clip in first 10 minutes. That included a 4-of-10 showing from deep.
Adelphi's shooting efficiency kept up in the second quarter, where it made 10-of-14 field goals (71.4 percent) and went into halftime with an overwhelming 52-21 advantage.Â
Katie Murphy finished the first half in double figures, scoring 11 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field. She also added five steals, three assists and two rebounds.
Murphy was one of six Panthers to score in double digits on the night. She ended the game with a line of 13 points, eight assists, six steals and four rebounds.
Jess Camarda led all players with 15 points.
Emily Miccile poured in 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
Julia Strachan and
Fallyn Stephens had 11 points apiece.
Leonie Edringer chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
The Panthers shot 53.6 percent (37-of-69) from the field for the contest -- their high watermark for the year thus far -- and 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from beyond the arc.
Adelphi dominated down low, outscoring Caldwell in the paint, 46-24, and converted 35 points off 20 Caldwell turnovers.
