Women's Tennis Takes Crucial NE10 Match at Le Moyne, 4-1

DeWitt, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team moved into a three-way tie for first place atop the league standings Sunday, with a 4-1 win against Le Moyne College in a Northeast-10 Conference showdown at Elevate Fitness in DeWitt.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at the Skytop Tennis Courts, but threatening weather conditions forced it to be moved indoors.

It was a quick turnaround for the Panthers (7-2, 7-1 NE10), who picked up a 5-1 victory over Assumption College at home less than 24 hours earlier.

In doubles, Barbie Quagliardi and Nicole Kielan remained undefeated this season in tiebreakers in an eventual 7-6 win at the top flight, while Amanda Franstedt and Nicole Stay won 6-3 at the No. 2 position to secure the team doubles point.

Then, in singles, Quagliardi took the opening set handily, 6-1, against Le Moyne's (8-1, 6-1 NE10) Birdem Oz, before dropping the second set, 6-3. Quagliardi prevailed though, claiming the decisive third set by a 6-4 scoreline.

Kielan made it back-to-back singles victories in straight sets with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Marta Nunez at the No. 2 flight. Slay wrapped it up for Adelphi with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 three-set triumph against Rebecca Peters in fourth singles.

With a week of conference play remaining, Adelphi now sits in a three-way tie with Southern New Hampshire University and Stonehill College for first place in the NE10 standings. SNHU upset previously-undefeated Stonehill, 4-3, on Saturday. Le Moyne has a match in hand and is a half game back of the three teams.

The Panthers will play their final week of regular-season conference matches at home, starting Wednesday (Oct. 9) against American International College at 2 p.m. at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
