Women's Tennis Downs Assumption, 5-1

Garden City, N.Y. - On Saturday, the Adelphi University women's tennis team handled Assumption College, 5-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference clash at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.

The Panthers (6-2, 6-1 NE10) got off on the right foot, winning the first two doubles flights to clinch the team doubles point.

Barbie Quagliardi and Nicole Kielan earned a 6-3 win over Julia Chappell and Maria Monje at the No. 1 flight, while Amanda Franstedt and Nicole Stay followed with a 6-4 victory at the second-doubles position.

Adelphi then won the first four singles flights to finish to seal the victory -- three of which came in straight sets.

Quagliardi won by identical 6-2 scores in top singles. Kielan was a straight-set victor (6-3, 6-1) against Monje at the No. 2 flight. Franstedt lost only two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win in the third-singles match. Stay rallied from a one-set deficit, winning 6-3 in the second set and 10-8 in the tiebreaker, at No. 4 singles.

The win was the Panthers' fourth in their last five matches. AU is also an impressive 4-1 on its home court. Meanwhile, Assumption fell to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in NE10 play.

Head Coach Frank Russo and his Adelphi squad are back at it tomorrow (Oct. 6), facing first-place Le Moyne College in an NE10 showdown at noon in Syracuse.
