Garden City, N.Y. - Junior forward
Alexsis Weiser provided the heroics with 2:52 remaining in regulation, lifting the Adelphi University women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Northeast-10 Conference rival University of New Haven on Saturday night at Motamed Field in Garden City.
In a match that saw a failed penalty kick for both sides, Weiser connected on the game-winner for the Panthers (6-2, 5-1 NE10) in the 88th minute. It was her team-leading third game-winning goal of 2019, which is tied for second-most in the NE10.
Weiser, who broke the scoreless tie on her game-high eighth shot of the contest, fired a
Maialen Herreros touch inside the left post for what proved to be the only goal of the match.
Earlier in the second half, Adelphi was in prime position to take the lead, when
Kerianne Scorce was tripped up by New Haven's Jordan Wischhusen in the 18-yard box for a penalty kick.
Senior forward
Erica Bleimeyer was then summoned for her third penalty shot attempt of the year. She had converted on her first two tries. However, UNH junior goalkeeper Paige Davis guessed correctly and cleared the ball off her line to keep the game scoreless.
The Chargers rallied behind that save and earned two golden opportunities of their own, including a penalty kick. Alyssa McMahon sailed her attempt from the spot over the crossbar though, while Tana Tufts had a touch that hit the crossbar square earlier in the half.
Adelphi managed to keep New Haven off the scoreboard for the full 90 minutes, keeping its streak intact of holding opponents without a goal at home to four consecutive games. The result was also the Panthers' fourth-straight win.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Krista Aliscio played 62:56 in net for AU and made two saves. Davis finished with 12 saves for UNH.
The Panthers will now have a week off, before facing Saint Michael's College in a NE10 showdown next Saturday (Oct. 12) at noon at Motamed Field.
