Garden City, N.Y. - Southern Connecticut channeled last year's Northeast-10 Conference finals victory inside the Center for Recreation and Sports as they took a 3-1 decision from host Adelphi University Tuesday evening in regular season action.
The Owls (10-13, 3-4 NE10), who actually lost to the Panthers in their last meeting (2018 NCAA First Round) used near identical scores in three of the four sets to secure a win and bounce back from a loss over the weekend to Franklin Pierce. Adelphi (10-8, 3-4 NE10) dropped their fourth consecutive match, despite three double-digit kill performances from three different players.
Sara Bisbe led all players with 17 kills - and doubled up with 11 digs - as
Sara Mandreja and
Cara McKenzie were both responsible for 11 kills apiece.
Grace Wegmann notched 37 assists as
Katarina Warburton anchored the defense with a match-high 28 digs.
The home team fell behind early in opening set, even though the Owls saw only one more kill on their stat line. It was the visitors that capitalized on four service errors from the hosts to string together runs that allowed them to take the first 25-21.
Tables turned in the following frame however, as a 5-1 run in favor of the Brown and Gold gave them a two-point advantage. The Owls used a 7-3 run of their own to regain the lead, but
Samantha Collins sparked an 8-3 stretch, as she matched her career-best kill number at eight.
After evening the match at one-all, Southern Connecticut used big blocks down the stretch in the third - finishing the set with a 7-4 advantage in the stat - to seal the deal on a 25-22 fourth set win. A tightly contested fourth set could have gone either way, with shining moments from Mandreja, but it was Southern's kill-leader Gabriela Gaibur who recorded four of her 15 in the final frame to pick up the league victory.
Adelphi volleyball will be back in action on Friday, November 1 when they travel to Bentley University for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
