West Haven, Conn. - Despite earning an opening set victory, the Adelphi University volleyball program dropped a Northeast-10 Conference contest to the University of New Haven Wednesday evening, inside Charger Gymnasium.
Cara McKenzie bested her career-mark in kills, posting a new best at 17 despite the loss for the team. Her .364 hitting percentage was not enough to help the Panthers (10-7, 3-3 NE10), top the Chargers (12-6, 5-1 NE10) on their home court. Three different Chargers reached double-figure kills, although the visiting team held an advantage in the category for the contest, as well as in blocks, aces and points.
A 6-1 run in the opening set allowed the Brown and Golf to reach a four-point advantage in the opening, but the home team only managed to come within two for the remainder of the set. A couple of blocks from McKenzie and a kill from
Grace Wegmann slammed the door on the first frame, taking the first buy a four-point margin.
Roles reversed in the second set, as New Haven managed to secure a 25-21 victory, using a 20-11 advantage in kills for the frame. In the third, Adelphi overcame a six-point deficit in the early going, evening the score at 12-all with the help of a block from Wegmann and McKenzie.
Sofia Pinzon nothced a kill that sparked a 5-1 run that knotted the score once again, however the home team scored four of the final six points to move ahead in the match with a 25-23 win.
Another tightly contested set, the fourth featured a string of runs from both teams that could have made it anyone's game. At 20-19, in favori of Adelphi,
Victoria Cast recorded a kill that forced the hosts to call a timeout. The home team managed to collect five of the final six points to secure the match victory.
Adelphi will return home on Friday, Nov. 1 when they host Bentley University at 5:30 p.m. inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
