Pleasantville, N.Y. - Freshman forward
Hailey Franco picked no better time to score her first collegiate game-winner, netting it in double overtime to send the Adelphi University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win at Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University on a rainy Tuesday night at Pace Stadium in Pleasantville.
The goal came 1:12 into the second extra period, when
Madison Raposo played a long pass from midfield for Franco, who ran onto it and had a step on her defender, before chipping a shot by Pace keeper Jade Mallea for the game-winner.
The two teams went into halftime scoreless, yet an eventful second half awaited. A half that saw four goals in the final 14:49.
The Panthers (9-3, 8-2 NE10) would fall into a 1-0 hole, but leveled the score only seconds after the Setters (9-6, 5-6 NE10) broke the tie.
Just 27 ticks after Pace took the lead,
Alexsis Weiser got into space and unleashed a shot that found the lower-right corner of the net for the equalizer.
Five minutes later, Adelphi went ahead. This time,
Sabrina Blaskovic picked up her long-awaited first collegiate goal. Off a free kick from the near left wing, Blaskovic lined a shot underneath the crossbar, giving the Panthers a 2-1 advantage with 9:13 left.
The game would need overtime to decide it though, as Pace's Megan Garrity floated a shot over
Sarah Hofmeier in the 88th minute to even things up at 2-apiece.
The Panthers outshot the Setters by a 12-8 count in the match, including a 2-0 differential in the two overtime periods. Adelphi also had eight shots on goal to Pace's three.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers return to action Saturday (Oct. 26) in a pivotal NE10 tilt at No. 18 Stonehill College. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m.
