Albany, N.Y. - Despite double-digit kills from
Sara Mandreja and
Cara McKenzie, the Adelphi University volleyball team dropped a five-set decision inside the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium at the College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon.
Mandreja and McKenzie accounted for 17 and 14 kills, respectively, but even with the upper hand in kills, the Panthers (10-6, 3-2 NE10) fell in five.
Grace Wegmann assumed setting duties, putting up 45 assists as
Katarina Warburton led all players (tying with Saint Rose's Tina Ceriello) with 21 digs on defense.
After taking a hotly-contested opening set, which featured 14 ties and three lead changes, Adelphi was forced into a negative hitting percentage, allowing the home team to get on the board. The third also proved to be a tight set, with ten deadlocks, but ultimately went the way of the Panthers to give them a 2-1 lead in the contest.
The Golden Knight defense, which held a 13-11 advantage in blocks for the match, caused the visitors to hit .063 across the final two stanzas.
The Panthers remain on the road next week as they travel to take on the University of New Haven on Wednesday, October 23. The Chargers are 8-2 over their last 10 games and are currently riding a three-game win streak.
