Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lada's Goal, Hofmeier's Stellar Start Carries Women's Soccer Over Franklin Pierce, 1-0

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's soccer team took sole possession of first place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings Saturday, after a 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce University at Motamed Field in Garden City.

It marks the sixth time in as many games that the Panthers (8-3, 7-2 NE10) have held their opponent without a goal at home.

It did not come without its challenges though. However, Adelphi sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Hofmeier did not miss a step in her first start of 2019, making a career-best 13 saves. Her 13 stops were the most for a Panther goalkeeper since Sam Whitney's 14-save performance against American International College on Oct. 30, 2013.

Hofmeier was peppered with shots in the first half, but turned aside all seven attempts that came her way to keep the game scoreless. That included a stretch of three consecutive stops in a 23-second span -- all of which required a diving save from Hofmeier.

Hofmeier's incredible efforts led to a swing in momentum in the second half, as Adelphi broke through for what was the only goal of the match in the 55th minute.

Off a re-start, Tori Flaherty sent a free kick from the far sideline towards the box. As Franklin Pierce's (4-7-1, 3-6 NE10) keeper came out to deter a scoring chance, the ball caught enough of Jacklyn Lada's head for it to trickle underneath Casey Kane for the goal. It was Lada's first goal since netting the deciding tally in the team's season-opening win over Wilmington University on Sept. 8.

Following Lada's goal, Hofmeier made four more saves to put the lid on the Panthers' sixth-consecutive victory at home.

The Panthers were outshot in the contest by a 19-10 count. It was the first time this year that Adelphi had been outshot by its opponent.

Head Coach Brooke DeRosa and her Adelphi squad are back in action Tuesday (Oct. 22), when they face Pace University in a crucial NE10 showdown at 7 p.m. in Pleasantville.
