Rockville Centre, N.Y. - In its last non-conference regular season contest this season, the Adelphi University volleyball program suffered a three-set loss to nearby regional foe Molloy College Wednesday afternoon, inside Quealy Gymnasium.
The Lions (16-4), who were seeking a win after dropping a non-league decision to Flagler College over the weekend, used an advantage on offense to close out the 3-0 sweep over Adelphi. The Panthers (9-6), despite holding the upper hand in blocks, were held to a sub .100 hitting percentage for the game, and for just the fourth time this season.
A 6-2 run for the home team put them ahead in the first set, but a kill from
Sara Mandreja sparked a 4-0 run that gave the Brown and Gold a one-point lead. Eight of the following 10 points were earned by Molloy which saw them extend their lead to five, and ultimately take the opener by a six-point margin.
Both teams recorded a negative hitting percentage in the second frame which resulted in an identical score to the first. The Lions jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the early going, but
Sara Bisbe notched a kill that allowed Adelphi to rattle off four unanswered points, and cap the run with a kill from
Cara McKenzie. It was
Grace Wegmann's strike that made way for a five-point string for the visiting team, which included a block each from Wegmann and
Sofia Pinzon to bring them within two. Unfortunate service errors and an ace for Molloy allowed the hosts to close out the second set victory to move to 2-0 in the match.
Momentum stayed with the home team as their runs of four to five points at a time put them in control of the third and final set. The Lions used 14 kills compared with Adelphi's nine to close out the victory en route to their 10th win of the season.
The Panther squad will resume its Northeast-10 Conference slate on Saturday, October 19, when they trip to the College of Saint Rose for a 1:00 p.m. meeting.
