Volleyball Runs Past Assumption, 3-0

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team bounced back nicely Saturday afternoon, sweeping Assumption College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-19), in a Northeast-10 Conference match at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City.

The Panthers (10-4, 3-1 NE10), who halted a short two-game skid, hit at a solid .295 clip and served 12 aces in the effort. Both marks were a season-high at home in 2019.

Adelphi fell behind early in the first set, but the Panthers came back in a fury. The hosts rallied from a 9-7 deficit with an impressive 14-1 run to surge ahead in the game at 21-10.

Senior libero Katarina Warburton served nine consecutive points in the stretch. A kill from Cara McKenzie put the exclamation point on a 25-12 opening-set victory. The first set saw Adelphi hit at an outstanding .500 mark.

The second set remained tightly contested, until the Panthers pulled away late. Leading 13-9, Adelphi closed out the set on a 12-5 run to take it, 25-13. McKenzie was a force yet again for the Panther offense, registering three kills and a service ace in the burst.

In the third and final set, Adelphi jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead and never looked back. The Panthers would build as much as a 19-7 advantage in the game, before capturing a 25-19 victory to secure the sweep.

McKenzie put down 10 kills in the match on a .533 hitting percentage. Sara Mandreja led all players with 13 kills. Brenna Valsted allocated 18 assists and tallied seven kills and nine digs. Warburton contributed eight digs and four aces.

Head Coach Danielle MacKnight and her Adelphi squad will take a break from conference action to face local rival Molloy College in a tough regional tilt on Wednesday (Oct. 16) at 7 p.m. in Rockville Centre.
