Garden City, N.Y. - For the first time since 2015, the Adelphi University women's tennis team won a share of the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season title, after a 6-1 rout of Saint Anselm College in an NE10 clash at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
The Panthers (9-2), who wrapped up the conference season at 9-1, currently lead the NE10 standings and are in contention for the league tournament's No. 1 seed.
Adelphi lost only one game between No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the team doubles point.
Barbie Quagliardi and
Nicole Kielan shut out Kaitlin Hughes and Emily Jacy, 6-0, at the top flight, while
Amanda Franstedt and
Nicole Stay won 6-1 against Maikah Bulpitt and Anastasia Kapothanasis in second doubles.
The Panthers also cleaned up in singles, as four of the six matches finished in straight sets. Quagliardi and Franstedt were 6-0, 6-0 victors at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Stay and
Lea Baschanow individually won via 6-1, 6-0 decisions at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Kielan prevailed in three sets over Kapothanasis in the second-singles flight, 6-1, 5-7, 10-6.
Adelphi will now wait on results from Southern New Hampshire and Stonehill, both of whom are chasing the Panthers in the standings. SNHU wrapped up its conference season at New Haven today at noon, while Stonehill will travel to Syracuse on Monday to make up a re-scheduled match against Le Moyne. The 2019 Northeast-10 Conference Championship is set to begin on Oct. 23, with first-round matches.
Adelphi wraps up the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 13) in Flushing against non-conference rival Queens College. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
