Easton, Mass. - It was an 18th-minute goal from
Filippo Peri that stood up as the game's only tally Saturday, as the No. 4 Adelphi University men's soccer team defeated Stonehill College, 1-0, in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt on a wet Skyhawk Field in Easton.
Peri, who hadn't scored since Sept. 17 at Georgian Court University, tallied his team-leading third game-winning goal of 2019.
In the 18th minute,
Ofek Pinto sent a long pass from midfield to an unmarked Peri inside the box. Peri then took a couple of dribbles, before curling a shot inside the right post to stake Adelphi (10-0-1, 6-0-1 NE10) to an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers would hold the Skyhawks (3-7-1, 1-4-1 NE10) to just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes and bring a one-goal cushion into halftime.
In the latter period, Stonehill outshot the Panthers by an 8-4 count, but could not make any of its opportunities count.
Adelphi freshman goalkeeper
Daniel De La Heras made tough saves on both shots he faced in the second half to preserve his first career shutout.
The Panthers and Skyhawks recorded 14 shots apiece in the contest, with Adelphi holding an 8-3 edge in shots on target. The visitors also earned eight corner kicks to Stonehill's seven.
Head Coach
Gary Book and his Adelphi squad wrap up their three-game road trip next Saturday (Oct. 19) in Millersville, Pa. at non-conference opponent Millersville University at 3 p.m.
