Women's Basketball Hangs Tough with Brown in 75-62 Defeat

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team kicked off 2019 with its toughest test of the season, facing off against Division I Brown University in non-conference action on Wednesday night inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.

The visiting Bears (8-7) ultimately used a 10-point edge in the second quarter (25-15) en route to a 16-point lead at halftime, in a game which ended in favor of the Ivy League club, 75-62.

Adelphi opened the game with a 9-4 lead, as three made baskets from Niajah Morgan, Katie Murphy and a three from Fallyn Stephens got the Panthers (6-6) off to a quick start, but Brown closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run and a 17-11 advantage at the end of one.

The Panthers hung even in scoring in the third period, with each team tallying 23 points apiece, and outscored the Bears 13-10 over the final 10 minutes.

After trailing by as much as 23 early in the third quarter, Adelphi whittled the deficit to 13 points behind an 11-2 scoring run in the middle minutes of the fourth, as Leonie Edringer scored eight of her 12 points for the game in the second half.

The redshirt junior tallied a double-double for Adelphi as she added 14 rebounds, with three blocked shots, while Morgan added a team-high 14 points.

Adelphi held a slim edge on the glass by a margin of 49-46, and held Brown to 37 percent shooting from the floor after the Bears made 50 percent of their shots in the first half.

The Panthers return to Division II action on Saturday, when they travel to the University of the District of Columbia for a 1 p.m. non-conference regional contest in Washington, D.C.
