Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Gets Back in Win Column with 74-68 Win at UDC

Washington, D.C. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team snapped a three-game skid in its non-conference finale on Saturday afternoon by downing the University of the District of Columbia on the road, 74-68.

A balanced scoring effort from Adelphi's guards saw four players score at least 10 points, with a second-half surge by Niajah Morgan contributing to her game-high 18, as well as her second double-double of the season.

Morgan totaled 15 points and seven boards in the second half, playing all 20 minutes, while Jess Camarda totaled 11 of her season-high 17 after halftime, which included shooting 9-for-10 from the free throw line.

Fallyn Stephens and Emily Miccile shouldered the load for the Panthers in the first half, when they trailed early in the first and were unable to shake a persistent effort by the Firebirds (4-9), combining for 21 points.

Stephens ended the afternoon with 15 points, all on made three-pointers, for her first game in double figures since Dec. 5, and Miccile finished with 17 off the bench plus five boards.

Despite being held to a season-low four points on 2-for-9 shooting and dealing with foul trouble, Leonie Edringer also helped the Panthers earn a staggering 45-26 advantage on the glass with 11 rebounds, while rookie Emma Cuccurullo pulled in a career-high six.

A tightly-contested first half saw 11 lead changes and neither side able to take a lead larger than five, as Adelphi began with just three points from the floor after a cold-shooting first five minutes.

Nonetheless, the Panthers outscored the Firebirds 9-2 over the first 4:54 of the opening quarter, taking a 12-10 lead as Stephens knocked down a straightaway triple right before the horn.

The home team responded by scoring nine of the next 12 to match its largest lead at 19-14 (5:46), but a 13-2 swing over three minutes in the Panthers' direction game them a lead they never relinquished for the rest of the game, an advantage which teetered in the high single- and low double-digits, and peaked at 14 in the fourth.

The Panthers return to Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 9 as they travel to Assumption College for a 5:30 p.m. contest in Worcester, Mass.
