Colchester, VT - Freshman
Ronnie Silva knocked down a three-pointer with under three minutes to play to lift the Adelphi University men's basketball team to a 64-58 victory at Saint Michael's College Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Silva banked 18 points in the win, with 16 coming in the second half alone, while grabbing five rebounds as
Jack Laffey also contributed double-figure points, finishing with 12.
Nick Cambio went 4-4 from the field and also pulled down eight boards, adding one block to the team's four in the win.
The Panthers (11-7, 5-5 NE10) got out to a slow start against the Purple Knights (5-11, 2-9 NE10), as the teams played through five lead changes and three ties in the opening 12:46 of the contest. The home team jumped out to their largest advantage -and the most for either team in that time- of five with a lay-in from Jordan Guzman. A
Conor McGuinness jumper put the Brown and Gold back on track as they later used a 14-5 run to forge ahead 32-25 on Cambio's lay-up with 1:42 to go.
Saint Mike's got in the final word of the first half to keep their deficit at five, as a put back from Walker Storey made it 34-29 after the opening 20 minutes of action.
The Panthers led by eight points twice in the opening two minutes of the second stanza, including 39-31 on Cambio's bucket at 17:43. Saint Michael's tied the game nearly two minutes later, which set off a 22-5 run, as Levi Holmes III scored 10 points and Guzman handed out four assists.
The visitors were able to end the game on a 15-2 run in which Silva scored five points before Laffey buried a go-ahead triple at 3:28, and Cambio's freebie made it 58-56, but Holmes' lay-in tied the game with 2:13 left.
Silva hit a step-back go-ahead trey at 59.1 seconds, and the Purple Knights missed four shots in the ensuing 33 seconds before Silva went 1-of-2 on free throws at 22.8 seconds. The home team blanked on another two-point try and Laffey sealed the win with two free throws at 10.7 ticks.
Adelphi rings in the 2019 spring semester with their next home game on Wednesday, January 23. With the help of the Center for Student Involvement (CSI), Student Activities Board (SAB), Student Government Association (SGA), Avo Taco and The Greene Turtle, the Welcome Back Bash will commence with free food, prizes and giveaways during the women's game at 5:30 p.m.
