Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot Shooting Stuns #9 Saint Anselm

Garden City, N.Y. - Behind career-high points from Conor McGuinness and Ronnie Silva, the Adelphi University men's basketball program tarnished the league record of #9 Saint Anselm College with a 98-89 victory.

The Hawks (12-2, 8-1 NE10) started the season on an 11-game winning streak but lost their first contest in 2019 against Daemen College (RV) and their second to the Panthers (10-6, 4-4 NE10). McGuiness finished the contest with a new career-high 26 points and Silva added 19 (also a career-best mark) in the win. The two combined for 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the night saw three other players reach double-figures.

Neither team picked up a foul call in the opening seven minutes, which kept the game moving at an easy pace to start. The first half saw even play throughout with both teams shooting lights out from three-point range as they combined, for 21 made three-pointers and 11-12 shooting from the free throw line.

Adelphi extended their lead twice to five points, once on an Oswald Parker III jumper and again with the help of McGuinness, but the Hawks stayed near and swung the game in their favor shortly after.

Down the stretch the teams traded three-pointers, but Saint A's Gustav Suhr-Jessen got the last word with his bucket with 40 seconds remaining to knot the game as time expired and both teams headed for the locker room.

Nick Cambio's layup at 16:31 in the second gave the home team an early six-point advtange, but Saint Anselm used three consecutive three's to push back out front. The Hawks fell-behind due to eleven unanswered points from Adelphi midway through the half and capped with a Jack Laffey tre, a deficit they ultimately were unable to overcome.
McGuinn
ess was 5-6 from the charity stripe after the ten-minute mark as Silva and Parker III did their part as well to keep the Hawks at bay. The largest lead of the game came for Adelphi with 1:36 left in regulation with back-to-back free throws from Parker III.

For the contest, Adelphi held an advantage in rebounds by one and shot just three percent better from the field overall.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday night, as they host Merrimack College inside the Center for Recreation and Sports at 7:30 p.m.
