West Haven, Conn.- A hat trick from senior midfielder Emily Power, and a four goal first half paced the Adelphi University field hockey team to a 6-0 shutout victory over the University of New Haven Chargers Wednesday evening.
The Panthers (3-3, 2-0 NE10) received goals from four different players throughout the contest, with Power leading the pack with three, alongside Kate Manson, Jackie Brown and Elissa Frein who each tallied one.
Adelphi out-shot the home team 25-6 at the end of 70 minutes, with 19 landing on goal. The Chargers (0-5, 0-3) were shut out for the third consecutive contest, despite goalkeeper Natalie Shaker recording 13 saves, matching her season-high set against Assumption.
The Brown and Gold got on the board first within the first eight minutes, when Power received a cross from Manson at the top of the arc. Less than four minutes later, Frein took it herself at the top of the arc and slammed it in the back of the cage to put the Panthers up 2-0.
Power scored her second and third goals of the night within five minutes of each other, still with 15 remaining in the first half. A long pass from Danielle Kempf to the senior allowed her to put the Panthers' third goal on the board. Five minutes later, Power slid another goal past Shaker, giving Adelphi a 4-0 lead headed for the locker room.
In the second half, solid defense by Manson on New Haven's side of the field allowed her to run down field to tap in Adelphi's fifth goal of the night. Less than two minutes later, Brown tallied the final goal for the Panthers in a scramble in front of the cage, deflecting a pass from Manson into the net.
Freshman Leah Savage secured her third straight shutout victory, improving to a 3-3 record.
The Brown and Gold will travel to Southern New Hampshire University for a conference contest on Sept. 29. The match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.Â
