Garden City, N.Y. - For over 400 minutes over the past two weeks, the Adelphi University women's soccer team was not scored upon, but a penalty kick for Kelsey Burr of Southern Connecticut State in the 53rd minute on Wednesday night on Motamed Field ended that streak, and the Panthers' unbeaten run to begin the season.
The 1-0 decision in favor of the Owls (6-3, 5-1 NE10) handed Adelphi (6-1, 5-1 NE10), the 16th-ranked team in Division II, its first defeat of 2018 and first loss to an NE10 opponent in the regular season dating back to Oct. 21, 2017.
After a scoreless first half with just seven combined shots between the two clubs, both teams ramped up the offensive pressure in the second half, combining for 18 shots.
However, it was a challenge on defense by
Mia York in the box on Burr which led to the game's only goal, as both Burr and
Alexsis Weiser had been turned aside by their opposing keepers over the first six minutes of the second half. Burr finished off the penalty kick, her third goal of the season, in the far corner of the goal to finally break the scoreless tie.
SCSU's Abigail Allen made seven saves over the course of 90 minutes for the Owls, recording her second shutout of her rookie season thus far, while Adelphi's
Sarah Hofmeier was dealt the first defeat of her collegiate career despite tying a season-high with six saves.
The Panthers ramped up their offensive pressure late in the game, taking seven of their 15 shots for the game over the final 15 minutes, but Allen proved up to the challenge with three stops in that span.
Adelphi will look to get back to its winning ways on Saturday, Sept. 29, welcoming Le Moyne College to Motamed Field for a 12 p.m. NE10 contest.
