West Haven, Conn. - A five-goal second half proved the undoing for the Adelphi University men's soccer team on the road on Wednesday evening as the Panthers fell to the Chargers of the University of New Haven, 6-3.
Adelphi (3-2-1, 2-1 NE10) held two leads in the contest at 1-0 and 2-1, but ultimately surrendered three unanswered goals to gall for the first time in league play this season after
James Thristino tied the score at 3-3 in the 78th minute.
Taylor Kazczynski scored his third goal of the season in the seventh minute, putting the Brown and Gold ahead early as he headed a Thristino cross into the right side of the net. After the Chargers answered in the 16th minute, the two sides stayed even until halftime, despite an 11-4 edge in overall shots for New Haven.
Thristino gave Adelphi the lead back in the 63rd minute, taking aÂ
Stephen Megaloudis cross from the far side in for the Panthers' second header of the game. However, a defensive miscommunication for the Brown and Gold led to New Haven's second goal of the game, as a defender on the Adelphi back line inadvertently headed the ball past
Matt Apicella in goal with 67:52 gone by.
Just 30 seconds later, New Haven scored again as Aurochit Patnaik scored from a cross by Pablo Perez-Gomez which went through the entire box before finding the back of the net to Apicella's right.
Overall, the Chargers out-shot the Panthers 18-12 over the course of 90 minutes in a physical contest which saw seven yellow cards and 29 total fouls.
The Panthers are back in action at home against Saint Anselm on Saturday, Sept. 22. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
