Volleyball Battles for 3-2 Victory over Bridgeport

Garden City, N.Y. - In their second five-set victory in as many weeks, Adelphi volleyball took down regional foe University of Bridgeport Tuesday evening to win their third straight contest.

Grace Wegmann, who produced a career-high 51 assists also added 10 digs to her stat line in the victory, notching her third double-double this season. Sara Bisbe led the Panthers (10-3) for the evening, accounting for a game-high 19 assists as two other saw double-figure kills in the win. Emily Burford of the Purple Knights (7-4) posted a team-high 15 kills as three different players accounted for double-digit digs, despite the loss.

Adelphi battled from an early deficit to bring the teams even, but a 10-3 streak in favor of the visitors put the home team back down by eight. An attack error from the Knights caused the Panthers to jump on a run of their own, scoring eight unanswered to bring the opening set back to a tie at 18-18. Bridgeport's late scoring runs were enough to earn the first set win, at 25-22.

The hosts' best set of the evening came after a 25-13 win, where the Brown and Gold accounted for 15 kills and posted a .481 team hitting percentage. A 5-0 start set the team up for success as they never trailed for the remainder of the second, as the doubled the Purple Knights score on several occasions throughout.

A very back-and-forth affair, Bridgeport narrowly won the third set to take an advantage in the match, however in front of their home crowd for the second time in two weeks, Adelphi forced a fifth set with a 25-18 victory.

The Purple Knights headed out to an early 3-0 lead, but consistent serving for Katarina Warburton (27 digs) allowed the Panthers to take control of the match. Several Bridgeport miscues coupled with kills from Cara McKenzie and Sara Mandreja and capped with a service error from the opposition forced the switch with Adelphi holding an 8-6 lead. Bisbe accounted for four of the final six kills of the evening, as Mandreja and Madison Canestrari chipped in the final two en route to a 15-11 decision.

Danielle MacKnight and her squad return to Northeast-10 Conference action this weekend when they travel to face Assumption College on Saturday, September 22. Opening serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
